| I bought a small group of free martin holstein heifers in march as light 4wts. The reason i did so was because of a local grain byprouduct i could get my hands on, and at the time i was backgrounding calves and wanted an animal i could feed a much more heavy grain ration. So i got with my nutrionist to test the byproduct and develop me a ration and we have been rolling with that now since we got them in.
I have very little experience with the holsteins at this size as ive only ever started bottle babies up too 300lbs or so, and my other experience is backgrounding a 100 or so black calves and selling to a neighbor. I plan to feed these out completely as i have plenty of byproduct to do so, and they seem to be growing pretty well IMO.
My question is do they look like they're growing like a typical holstein at that 7-8wt range or should they have less frame more fat at this point? My nutrionist says they look good, but im more uneasy about it because i just lack the experience lol. I dont want to take it in the shorts on how they yield at the packer. Anyway, also holstein experts, do you think my 7-8wt assumption of them is a good guess? Been a little warmer than id like to be hauling them around for really nothing, so i havnt gotten to the coop with a small group to weigh them. Thank you!
