Subject: Looking at buying a transplanter. Lots of questions.

Grandview, TX
I’m thinking about getting a one row transplanter to use next year on a few acres. I’ll mainly be using it for melons that aren’t irrigated and no plastic mulch used. There are none around my area and I know nothing about them except what I’ve read on the internet so far.

Between a water wheel, carousel, or finger; which should I be looking at and what are the pros and cons of each ? From what I’ve gathered, fingers are the least desirable. I’ll be running mostly on sand, but how do they perform in bedded heavy clay soil that’s 80% clay ?

Watermelons are planted 6’ apart in the row and cantaloupe are planted 3’ apart. How do you change the in row spacing on a carousel or finger ? I’m guessing it has different sprocket sizes to change for spacing like a transmission on a planter. How big of a tractor do you need to run on it with liquid ? I’ve got larger tractors, but I would like to ideally run it on a 584 IH.
