It’s fine to stop at half milk like if your dirt is black on top and weather is mild. If it’s not good and wet or weather is bad make maybe 1/2” passes on it to keep top wet. Corn is very lazy at the end.

Sign of excellent grain fill if the variety usually has big dents. But some varieties don’t dent much. Your ear looks like it’s a sign you about maxed it out. I’d drop a couple thousand more seed next year unless this one was excellent.
