If you can push your calving window back/ahead from average in your area renting is going to be much more economical. First year I watched the bulls for ~8 months vs paying rent. Lots of guys are happy to have 0 bulls around at calving time.

For a small herd, calving at a different time so you can use someone else's bulls is the way to go. It honestly benefits both parties by reducing the amount of time that a bull is being fed but not used.
1 bull can easily service 15 cows, but if something happens to him, best case scenario is you catch it quick and you'll have some cows miss a cycle before you get a new bull with the cows. Worst case scenario is you'll have 15 open cows at preg check time.
