Using a very safe product that’s not ABSOLUTELY safe, but doesn’t work to treat a disease is fine until you are the oddball that it’s not safe for or you mess up your self dosing and take too much and cause yourself harm. Then, you’ve damaged your health for no possible benefit in return.
Taking the same very safe drug for a condition that it works very well against changes the calculation entirely. There is measurable/demonstrable benefit to the population that far outweighs the tiny proportion of people that will have a serious adverse reaction to the very safe drug or product. If you’re one of the unlucky ones that gets sick, you or your family can at least say you had the odds in your favor!
Then there’s the folks that take the very safe but ineffective product that they very strongly believe works and do not take treatment that has been proven to work. Better hope for a condition or disease where a placebo effect has a good chance to improve one’s outcome!
Ah, I absolutely love such clear and concise irony. |
