I’ve seen the very same thing when I baled the stalks off some no till ground. The next growing season, the beans were taller and greener right to the row were I baled. My guess is it has to do with how much N gets tied up by decomposing stalks. I would assume that beans do need some soil available N while they are little and still developing a root system and the decomposing stalks compete for that. As others noted, the greener, bushier beans were also where the white mold hit the hardest.
