Subject: Tar spot spray timing

This is more targeted for farmers who have experience battling tar spot- we have had tar spot the last few years, but it has come in very late, so unless you had some very late planted corn it did not affect yield much and was too late to spray. This year corn is currently in the VT-R2 stage depending on plant date and tar spot can be found in most fields with a few spots on the bottom leaves. I have seen one field where there was a significant amount of tar spot, but it was being sprayed at the time.

So, if can go into a field and find tar spot in lower canopy, do you wait and see if it progresses and then spray if it is getting worse? Do you spray as soon as you can see it? Should it have been sprayed last week?

With some of the corn just at VT/R1, many are just watching and waiting, wanting to just use one fungicide pass to control it. They are worried if the spray at VT/R1 it won't hold long enough and will have to come back and spray in 3 weeks.

Main question is spray it yesterday, now, or wait a week if we are seeing some spots in lower canopy?
