looking at a Gehl 1285 chopper with a 3 row head, how much HP to pull this machine? How many HP could I deduct if I went 2 row?
Book says you can run up to 300 input hp.
Depending upon your corn yield you might want to stay with the 3 row head - - - heavy corn (25 t/acre chopped) well then a 2 row might be all she'll take if you don't have lots of jam on the crank!
Would suggest you don't except in corn. In heavy swathes of anything this is a total pos!
Would likely be able to do something with anything over 150 hp but at around 225 you could get some results happening.
(Would all depend upon the torque capabilities of the tractor - - - higher torque is better.
Would suggest tossing all the ag chain off of that girl and replacing with new sprockets (if needed) and industrial chain - - - it will help but not eliminate the design errors.
If your interested I have some suggestions on what else to change on the hay header - - say something if you're interested.)
