Cleaned out a couple last year to original depth. They were dry, so I just took the tractor and drove in from the upper end. Got a bucket full of muck and backed out. Repeat over & over.

I'd at least take them to orignal depth. You'll have to decide if original depth is enough capacity for the number of cows and the amount of rain you get.

Obviously mine dried up, so it didn't have enough capacity. However, once I dug out all the muck, I bet it added 25,000 gallons of room that could hold water now.
