I have a healthy amount of distrust in the government but I assume Russia would have been tracking the flight and would have done anything possible to embarrass us on the world stage by calling us out if it was fake. The space race was one thing that the Soviets had been beating us in and it had to be devastating to them when we landed on the moon.
