What I would call a creek here would only flow enough water for a few acres.
If I was doing it I would dig down and get a flat spot next to some water a few foot deep. Perhaps even making a small reservoir to the side, letting the debris drop out.
An hour with a hoe or cat can move a lot of dirt.
The idea of floating the pump sounds pretty good also, one would just need a huge tree and strong cable in case of high water.
