We have swathed oats for over 40 years. Swathed oats is far superior to direct cut any way you look at it. Our oats is never below 98% germination even if it sat in our metal bin for 5 years. I have seen many samples of direct cut oats that took a week to germinate while swathed oats already had a 2 - 3" sprout. A great deal of certified oats today is combined direct with low germination and seedling vigor.

Swathed oats is much fresher and better for feed also.

There is nothing wrong with swathing a field that still has some green oats. It will dry in the swath and most of it will blow out the back of the combine. You are correct - if you wait until the green oats is ripe you will lose the best oats.
