Subject: RE: Round bale weights?

Driftless SW Wisconsin

On a related topic, baler pressure setting. I was running my JD 569 with the gage at about the 2 o'clock position. It made very heavy bales.

However cows, especially the older girls, were actually having a difficult time peeling hay off of the bale in the feed ring.

I've backed it off to about the 12 o'clock position and there is a noticeable difference in the ability of all of the herd being able to pull hay off of the bale. They don't need to work nearly as hard to pull a mouthful off of the bale as from my higher pressure setting bales.

Here's a picture from last February of some cows and heifers eating from one of my lower pressure bales as I was setting it out.
