We love our 2011 9770. It's just, new enough to have all the luxuries but old enough to not be too overly complicated and deal with def. I have heard that the dog legs on the sieves wear out around 2K hrs but we have yet to change ours at 2300. When we were ready to upgrade from the 9600 I asked the best combine tech at my dealership what combine was the best combination of reliability and capacity and he didn't hesitate at all... (keep in mind that was probably in 2018 or so the answer might be different now)

Don't let your grandpa out of the cab, with the auto header height and auto steer it will be far easier to run than the 9600. I have learned over the years that you just have to force these stubborn old farmers to try the newer stuff. A couple days later he will be driving around grinning from ear to ear, but they will quit if you let them. Just set aside plenty of time to ride around with him and let him get used to it.
