Little too late to help today, but the fact you say it has both a red and green light means it's a Gen 1 smart connector (not to be confused with a Gen 1 2020, Gen 1/2 2020s can be mix and matched with Gen 1/2 smart connectors). The Gen 1 smart connectors are notorious for just randomly crapping out and what you describe sounds textbook. Nothing at all makes sense and no pattern whatsoever. First thing I'd do is get another smart connector (preferably a new Gen 2) and swap it in, see if your problems go away.
Greatly appreciate the response! Will a Gen 2 smart connector, work with my old Gen 1 display?
