I always used a .22 pistol with bird shot. It will kill a pigeon, usually, without damaging the walls, either wood or steel. I was always able to close a door and go in to shoot them and just have to keep at it. I know boat owners hang old CD's or DVD's from fishing line to keep boats out from under their boat lifts.
