Subject: RE: Genomic testing

Eastern NE KS
Today, I genomic test all replacements and bulls plus a few more to test if I'm overlooking calves with potential. Earlier I test an entire calf crop to learn the technology and the info it could provide. That was a large investment compared to my utilization. I suspect ICC is correct a farm needs to commit to it for several calf crops to get it's use/value settled.

I had one bull produce a large negative surprise. His growth EPD's were ratcheted significantly lower due to genomics. That is a plus because when I suggest a calf has this or that strength I sure as thunder want my suggestion to be true.

Today most cows, all sires and all replacement females have genomic data infused into their EPD's. This results in my calves EPD's are not changing after the genomic test. Individual performance is in sync with these predictions so surprise changes has been limited.
