I guess I should have mentioned that the key circuit hasn't worked or been used in a few years. I've been just using a screwdriver across the solenoid for quite some time now. I know it's not safe and I know it's probably why my last starter didn't last as long as it should and sometime soon I'll figure out where in the circuit the problem is, but I'm just trying to start my tractor first. So I'm sure it's not a relay or key issue because nothing is hooked up other than the battery cable. Batteries are fully charged and cable is good - it starts right up, but the starter just sticks.
Shimming the starter makes the most sense as the next step to try. I'll do that next.
Shouldn’t matter to much if you use a screwdriver or not if there is no power to the solenoid then your ring gear is probably getting worn and has some bad spots in the teeth and not letting go of the starter drive gear .
