East of Broken Bow | Around 'here' the worst erosion came at the end of the dust bowl. Grass was dead, nothing to hold the soil, and the drought ended in downpouring, flooding rains. Ironically, for the most part (at least according to my Grandpa) is that the undisturbed pastures washed worse than most plowed fields, but keep in mind that was 'here'.
On the other side of the coin, for everyone griping about a farmer doing tillage, there is another griping about overuse of chemicals, which can be just as bad.
Just an observation, but I know a LOT of old farmers that did a lot of tillage, but I can't think of a single chemical applicator that lived to a ripe old age. | |
