I agree that it's a porcupine. I've seen a couple all the way down here in the past 10 yrs time. We also had a random bear track sighting just a coupl miles from here in the mud by a pond last year or year before and a mule was attacked by a mountain lion around that same time right on the edge of our 3k person town.
What critter would strip the bark off a tree?
