NW Iowa | Is the wheat washed before it is ground? When I was on the wheat harvest The farmers we cut for would randomly throw a can full of white powder that smelled like malathion in the wheat before it went up the auger and into the bin. They claim the wheat is washed before it is milled so the malathion or whatever it is is removed during the washing. I don't think they would mill wet wheat so either the wheat is dried after the washing or the farmer was feeding us a line about washing. Maybe the wheat is hit with a hard blast of air through a sieve to clean it and that is called washing?Insect bits in the wheat doesn't bother me much but rat droppings? Yuck! | |
