Subject: RE: Utility trailer spindle repairs

Faunsdale, AL
Yeah, he got both sides. Obviously it had no hubs and he had another axle with hubs that nobody had called for. So he made them fit the one I was calling about.

Axles are bent for camber and I couldn’t fit them in my little lathe anyway. Whatever I do to fix it “right” I’ll have to cut weld to take spindle off and then weld back in correctly.

New spindles are about $50 each. Axle is about $300 Not sure how long that takes or if there’s shipping on it too. No way can I pay myself and do it cheaper than the price for spindles but I wanted to know it it would be successful.

I think they usually recommend turning undersize 30-40 thousandths before laying the weld on. Last pass is a shallow screw thread to give overlay something to grab. I’ve done one short shaft before and it seemed to work ok. I’m more used to using brazing but never even thought about trying a spindle.

I might try it for practice if the spindle won’t be ruined
