We use Abilene machine augers even though they have a bad rap. We get the extended wear and I still hardface the edge of the flighting. You will most likely need to slit the coupler/auger to get the lower gearbox off. The gearbox splines go past the coupler so when the splines wear it locks onto the coupler and makes it basically impossible to remove in one piece.
