NWMO | It’s harder on your soil to do it in the spring than in the fall. Just ask the earthworms that are in that top 4” of soil in March/April how they enjoy the fumes. Furthermore, I can typically freeze the compaction out from the application equipment over winter, which is also better for soil microbial life. Not to mention that by applying when the ground is cold (32°-45°) in November/December the fertilizer remains in a more stable form do to the lack of nitrification.
I agree that NH3 is not the best thing for the soil, but to insist that spring applications are head and shoulders better on our 20+CEC soils is just not logical
