I used a spring loaded valve (like is used for a sight gauge). I bolted it to the man lid, I added a pulley, and some rope. The rope is tied to a jug 3/4 full of water. The jug pulls the handle open, to fill. When the water raises the jug floats, and closes the valve. Been working for 4 summers.
