Southwestern Texas Panhandle | I have over 800 acres of wheat and will graze out over 50% of the acres. In the past I've grazed out 15%. I like to winter graze until Feb 15 on wheat I'm going to graze out. I then let the wheat recover for a month and then put the spring grazing cattle out. I'd graze out 100% but like to have wheat stubble to plant spring crop into the next spring. Here is the formula I am using this year..
These are my long term averages.
Graze out period; March 15th - May 30th = 75 days
Lbs gained per animal per day = 2.5-3.0
Head per acre = 2
Price per lb gained = .45
Total = 75 * 2.5 * 2 * .45 = $168.75/acre
I am able to not have crop insurance, much less water, fertilizer, no harvest bill and I have 1 month shorter growing season(end of May) versus harvest (end of June).
