Oklahoma | Yes there is a lot of wheat being grazed. There would be more acres grazed but we had such a wet fall that there is a sizable amount that is too small to graze. If you are planning to take grazed wheat to harvest we like to take the cattle off at the end of Feb. As far as grazing out, mid-April is probably the farthest you would take it.
You kinda expect good steers to gain 2.5 pds per day. So say 50 days x 2.5 pds = 125 pds. Then beef is worth say .80 x 125 pds. = $100 per head. But you don't run a head to the acre so maybe $60 an acre is what you could make in beef instead of grain. This is just counting the time after you would have pulled them off. Thing is the harder you graze the less it is going to produce in grain.
Knowing what I know now about the market etc., I would have planted in mid-Sept. and grazed from Nov. till April. Probably what I will do next year depending on the market. | |
