SW MINNESOTA | Got to talking with a guy while looking at a chopping corn head at a farm show this week. He was saying in his opinion he believes when stalks get chopped too fine the soil looses “pore space and structure” for air and water where as when stalks are left longer and worked in that’s not such and issue. When I mentioned I need ground black for corn on corn he felt plowing the long stalks under was better than chopping fine and working with a ripper or chisel which for corn can put too much reside in the seed zone.
The more I think about it the theory makes a bit of sense but then again not sure.
I can say that my best corn on corn has usually been on plowed ground or ripped after baling stalks.
What you guys think?
