Did a spot check previous elections cited here as 5 data points could just be noise. Only checked corn but indeed the pattern holds even further back, albeit with smaller average moves. Going back to 1972 prices went up at least .30 cents from Jan 1st every election year, with significant >$1 moves in 1996, 1988, and 1980 and smaller 30- 50 cent moves in the rest of the years.


Still hard to know for certain that this isn't just cherry picking data though and it's just random chance that yearly highs weren't hit in January.
