It does take debris without breaking.  Have been running a rice grate with the inserts in the first section of our 9770 for the past 4 or 5 years.  I like the job it does in corn with the extra plant material that seems to show up as the crop gets drier towards the end of season or certain varieties with more MOG going through. We do not move that particular grate up and down between soybeans and corn as we do normally with the ones behind it to the rear.
