We have a 1940 built home, might have been 1941 I wasn't there to witness it. Home has two 'open hearth' wood fireplaces, we use one on occasion for ambiance, several times a winter but not to heat the home. I guess you could heat the home with them if the power were out for an extended period of time, not sure they are the most efficient form of heat but better than freezing.
