Doesn't the government help foot the bill if your homestead has no electric running to it? I would use your money getting cheap power to your property.
Friend of mine moved to north of Fairbanks Alaska to live off grid. He regrets not using the money he has into solar and batteries to just get a line ran to his remote cabin. The upkeep of the system probably cost him what the monthly electric bill would be anyways. You cannot generate power anywhere close to what you can buy it for.

He also runs a generator alot. Especially in the winter (8 months out of the year there). He would still need a generator backup but he is burning a lot of fuel.
He moved from Texas to the cold north to live off the land, but he can't even grow a potato or eat of corn up there.
