Called Cummins to order new cooler cover. Old one had a casting no. of 3974324(Parts diagram says to order 3974325). They said it's obsolete and I need a 5450367 along with a 5403905 gasket.
I ordered them. They're expensive.
Googled the part numbers and found this service bulletin. TSB180043
TSB doesn't mention a thing about the problem I experienced however as you can see in the pictures the problem area on my old one has been completely eliminated.
Old one has a galley that leads to the filter head down to the cavity where the pressure regulator valve dumps excess oil back to the crankcase. I have no clue what this galley does as it appears it's plugged when the filter adapter is installed.
Screw drivers are pointing to it in the pictures.
I believe with the oil filter off a guy could look up there with a flashlight and mirror to inspect but would be easier with the 4 bolts and filter adapter removed.
I don't have it on yet so I will post if something goes sideways on reassembly/startup with the updated cover.
