| I think they are approaching the EV market from a different angle than manufacturers. Manufacturers are all looking to squeeze ever better efficiencies out of their products.
Edison motors is taking the approach that for many applications mileage is only one of the considerations and sometimes it is a rather minor consideration. Having readily available parts is a major consideration in many industries. People often give the advice to buy ag equipment with a good dealer network in their area for the same reason. It is often better to not buy the absolute best product available if there will be issues with service.
Another aspect of their approach is to allow a person to tailor the components on their vehicle to match what they will be using it for. Service trucks come to mind. A person that does a lot of welding might want larger batteries installed to allow a lot of welding without having to run the ICE engine whereas a person that primarily turns wrenches might want a smaller battery to save weight.
Their systems will also be attractive to people who want to fix up their older vehicles. I myself will be watching to see how these retrofit systems evolve because I will seriously consider putting an entirely new and modern drivetrain in a very old vehicle we have.
