I know zero about feeding out cattle but does the increased feed efficiency of cracked/ground corn still come out ahead after you pay for labor and equipment compared to feeding whole corn?
This is the million dollar question, and maybe for operations with several hundred head or more on feed the extra couple percent of efficiency you pick up by texturizing pays, but for smaller operations I’ll argue it doesn’t. I have a good friend who has 13 head on feed and just bought a used grinder for $2500. I told him not to but he’s stubborn. I told him it’ll be 5 years or more now before he breaks even. And by then the gear box on a used grinder might go out. Not worth it in my opinion. |
