Excuse me while I do a little rant. One thing (ok maybe actually two) that leaps out at me is pounds weaned compared to cow weight. While these are ND averages you will see a similar trend most places. We had cows that would consistently wean 50% of her weight forty years ago, without tub grinders, bale processors, lick tubs etc. Lucky if they got a salt blocks and would often do it into their teens. Local grazing association lowered their stocking rates a few years ago because the rate had been figured for a 1100-1200 pound cows and now everyone was running bigger cows. So basically producing less pounds per acre. Even if you were weaning 700 pounds of calf per cow they are worth less money per pound. That is all.

(The argument I've been handed . . . )
Isn't that 770# calf impressive - - - - I topped the sale w him.
(Momma is a 1850 to 2000# girl so she 'looks' impressive but is a loafer at her job - - - raising a truly max calf.)

You're in ND - - - suggest you dig a bit - - - there was a breed group that was actually shooting for 2/3rds of mamma's weight.
