Southeast Washington | For our farm the tandems are our year around workhorses. They haul seed, fertilizer, chemicals, sprayer tender, and flatbed needs to haul hay or dirt or gravel. We have 2 tractors with triple axle trailers for hauling our grain. In our hills and conditions there are so many places the tandem will go that the semi wouldn't even think of going.
We bought an ex-tanker Peterbilt truck for $25,000 added bed, tank and hoist for $25,000 and a2 axle grain trailer behind it for $25,000 four years ago.
Two years ago we bought a complete Freightliner with 12 speed auto shift with 22 foot bed and tank/hoist for $48,000. We bought that mainly for my brother to drive as he is getting older and doesn't drive truck much so I understand the need for an auto.
In our area the main trucks are tandem straight trucks because conditions didn't allow a semi to get into most fields. Throw a trailer on behind during harvest and you have the capacity of a Sibley axle semi. Many with semis pulling pups have to have to do the pup to get to many of their fields. That's why we like having the triple axle trailers for simplicity and keeping the amount you can haul up.
