Unless you need a tandem for silage I'd look at a small auto trans semi and shorter hopper trailer. Anyone can drive these and you can get into any field entrance. Can haul 500-750 bu and even be sort of legal. Hoists fail at the worst possible time and overloaded tandems (they are always overloaded) always feel tippy to me going around corners.
You still might have to make your own auto-trans semi if you want to avoid emissions. Take the same truck you are looking at turning into a tandem dump, but instead shorten the frame, add a fifth wheel plate, and move the axles forward.

I want a strait tandem. Easier for my yard, sheds.I have done semis. If I do I wonder about load. If front mounted 10”x10” floor dump could be made. Between floor joists. You park on pit oversize for semi trailers. Pull front dumps set @3’ from front. You walk to rear, start dumping. Unless rear controls you walk to cab. By then front of box should be empty. Hoist should lift easy.
But hiring trucks is cheaper. Hauling a few loads with boxes |
