| We have tried several different options as our feeding operation has evolved over the years. Started with pto mixer grinders. Wore out a couple. That’s definitely not the way I would go.
We have a “mostly” automatic 20” electric roller mill that feeds an overhead bin. Drive under & gravity into wagon. Pretty simple, fed by electric augers from a bulk bin on both sides. Some sensors are bit problematic but overall it’s processed a lot of grain at a really reasonable cost/bu.
We also have a kit for a haybuster & tried a Lancaster hammer mill one season. Both of those are bigger, faster version of the mill on the pto grinder. This was mostly for processing HM corn we packed into piles.
This fall we did 300 acres of earlage with a Claas chopper and a 12 row head. Going forward, this method will be the bulk of our grain processing. Fast, simple and utilizes equipment we already have. Side benefits of free roughage, a wetter feedstuff & stalks for grazing. The only drawback is once it’s made there’s only one way to market it. | |
