East of Broken Bow | Here it sometimes gets windy enough to blow the stalks away if they are shredded.
For the most part, the cows will eat the edible part of the cornstalks if you just let them in.
I have had good luck putting out a lick tub. We will have a lick tub last 20 days with 150 head on it (don't put it right near the salt or water, make them walk a ways for it). When they get the best parts of the stalks eaten the lick tub will suddenly start disappearing faster. This is a good time to feed them a little alfalfa hay if you have a way to limit them. A good way is a bale processor stringing out the hay long enough so they all can eat at the same time together. If you don't have any hay to spare, add more lick tubs. Most years not really cheaper than alfalfa, but more convenient and easy to handle. When the husks and cobs are gone, and some of the leaves, they will start getting hungry, might be sooner if they are near calving. | |
