Between Omaha and Des Moines, 7 miles South of I80 | I used a Marine hand priming pump, with small hollow fitting, on the discharge end of hand pump hose, to fill fuel filters (with hose/fitting going to the outer diameter fuel filter holes= dirty side) when I knew I might have a hard time getting fuel filter to prime, if empty.
I stuck the suction hose, of marine hand primer pump, halfway, into trucker's fuel tank (NOT on Bottom of tank)
Note: lots of the diesel fuel, inside fuel tanks have already been circulated thru engines fuel filters, because newer engine designs "circulate" a lot of fuel, as diesel fuel is used as a coolant for the injectors. {Example = 3406E, C-15, C15 circulate rough 92 Gallons per hour, out the return fuel line, when running}
Edit: Even once you happen to get it started, I believe you still might have a problem, with "sucking air" . There still might be a culprit, to "why" the fuel system wouldn't hold a prime.
