Northern Nebraska
John smith already said it but Photosynthesis and capillary action.

Carbon from the atmosphere, hydrogen and oxygen from water pulled up from the ground by pressure gradients across the plant. Be it cellulose that makes up most of the plant matter to starch which makes up most of the grain it's produced from simple sugar. The monosaccharides it made plants then make polysaccharides like starch and cellulose. Most of the natural world is just different variations of polysaccharides.

A 200 bushel corn crop only uses 700 lbs of mineral nutrients the bulk comes from air and water. This is why there aren't giant holes underneath trees. This is also why you can grow hydroponic plants.
