As gpsdude said, to utilize the 542 base with non-Trimble hardware will have some extra hurdles or limitations. I have put a lot of GPS control systems on trenchers and the hardware is fine for the elements you described. For simple RTK recording lines, there are more consumer level devices at much lower cost. I can't post a sales pitch, but I can email you some info.
