I would say the real loss in efficiency is the added cost to build, and develop - and then end up with an engine that doesnt last as long and requires much more costly maintenance and rebuilds. Similar to an EV that sucks up so much resources to be built. That's where the true environmental cost is associated, savings never realized by better fuel usage vs power output, and a little bit cleaner exhaust pipe.
