Subject: RE: Corn on corn tillage management

WC MN & Valley of the Sun, AZ
The biggest problems I've run into with some fields third year and others fifth year corn on corn are sizing residue, burying residue so the soil warms up/dries out in the spring, and germination issues with residue in the seed trench.

Been tweaking the process over the years and the best so far is a lawn mower style chopping corn head, followed a few days later, allowing the fluff to settle, with some sort of medium aggressive disk (some would call it a VT but they're really not) and then run a 24" spaced disk ripper across it.

While strip till is intriguing, the iron and process needs to be tested and proven here in 22" rows with sticky heavy black soil. Neighbor just bought a 22" Soil Warrior and will be keenly following how that works over the coming years.

If you've already disked ripped ground going to corn next year and there are this year's corn stalks sticking up out of the ground and not in contact with soil, I'd run a VT disk over them the next two days before the ground freezes.

P.S. Yes, a rock picker and nabber are must haves. There's no getting around that until one declares war on those Canadian invaders. Rocks are going to keep coming to the surface no matter what tillage, or lack of, one does.
