Central Iowa | Soil nutrient cycling is very much so a non-linear subject IMO. I have a farm that has not had P&K applied for 4 years and has seen average removal of 250 bu corn and soil tests basically did not move at all over that period. Improvement in nutrient cycling in a variety of ways I believe is allowing me to unlock much more natural fertility that once was not accessible. Am I advocating to stop all fertilizer applications? No, but I do know that there is so much we do not know and so much natural fertility in most midwest prairie soils that we aren't accessing currently. IMO the only real concern is what can we get into the plant regardless of soil tests. | |
