Zone sampling is pretty cheap, but make sure you have good zones not SURGO soil maps. Most of the agronomists I work with for sure sample before corn/wheat and many do before soybeans as well. For that matter they are sampling before sugar beets, sunflowers, canola and most other crops as well.
