I was told that the old Modules could be fried by high voltage but the newer ones have a way to self protect from high voltage.
What age ECM? I have started tractors and combines from the mid 90's to early 2000's without an issue. I'd say it's more a crap shoot, or maybe a dirty ground issue if you are frying an ECM
