Speaking of brooms, a friend now long gone, knew a country store owner who kept a broom propped against the sales counter for years, each time the tenant farmers came in for groceries and whatever, he added the broom into the amount owed, said he sold that same broom hundreds of times

Heard the same story about the local general store now long gone. May be an old wives tale but could see it happening.
