We tried a wood burning one here, and we had a couple issues, 1. the heater didn't weight enough to stay under the water. We had to load a bunch of cinder blocks on top of it to keep it under the water. 2. The fire box wasn't tall enough to load a bunch of wood in and have it stay lit. seems like it would snuff the fire out because it didn't have enough oxygen as we couldn't get the fire down below the chimney.

Just a couple things to think about if you buy one or make your own.

Did yours have an air vent along the side to get more air down to the coals? I see some fully weld a piece of channel iron from top near the fill lid and basically ties in near the bottom. Just make sure there’s no pin holes to let water seep in :)
